TEDX 2025 10th year anniversary

Sue Campbell, Middle School English/Art Teacher & TEDxYouth@EB Director
Our community came together to celebrate the tenth anniversary of  TEDxYouth@EB in the beautiful Chou Hall at UC Berkeley's Haas Business School.  Chancellor and EB alum parent Rich Lyons launched a night of inspiring ideas with his talk on breaking boundaries in education.

Thirteen students gave talks this year on the theme “Breaking Boundaries.” We had two beautiful vocal performances by the EBMS choir and alumna Neris Frucht (‘22), and two talks by EB alumni Monique Jonath (‘16) and Bijan White (‘09). Our team and speakers performed live and virtually on our TEDx Sound Stage to record talks ranging in topic from symbiotic relationships in nature to why everything you know about twins is probably wrong.

The student speakers from the seventh and eighth grade had been working since last spring in our TEDx elective.  They pitched ideas, did research, drafted talks and then worked with coaches Sue Campbell, Roger Mullins, Dan Widmaier and Gabrielle Hedlund on ideation, editing and rehearsing talks.  Student producers made up of former speakers Lucine Gold, Arthur Robert, Sofia Jun, Victoria Dudley piloted a leadership program to give back to the program that inspired their love of speaking and TEDx. They wrote copy for the website, the event script, coached and emceed at the event.  We are so proud of everyone’s hard work and look forward to sharing videos of their performances and talks over the next month.

Thank you to all of our amazing speakers and our engaged live and virtual audience for making this year special and the best attended event so far.  In addition to our live TEDx Sound stage, our after party at the Cal Faculty Club gave us an opportunity to toast the founders of the program 10 years ago:  A shout out to all of you who first challenged the physical and social boundaries of our school community and envisioned a new way to learn, share, and grow through a partnership with TEDx and its international network.

A toast to the three moms, Helene Cahen, Laura Clydesdale and Jennifer Villarina, who envisioned a partnership to TEDx, pitched it to the middle school team back in 2015, funded the project, created an innovative full day Saturday event with workshops, lunch and fascinating talks and passed on the leadership to Eileen Loustau, Ann Lefkovits and Angie Jacobson who carried the torch. We also recognize Gabrielle Hedlund, a fabulous devoted coach that first year and the nine consecutive years of the program
