Episode Two: An Introduction to Positive Discipline

Episode two of the EB Podcast features Magali Noth, Primary School Head and Sarah Parks-Urbano (aka "Sparks"), EB Lower School Counselor, introducing the very important concept of positive discipline. Positive discipline is a parenting and teaching philosophy that focuses on guidance, respect, and teaching life skills rather than punishment. By balancing kindness with firm boundaries, parents can help children develop responsibility, emotional awareness, and strong relationships.

What Is Positive Discipline?
Positive discipline teaches that discipline means guiding children rather than punishing them. The goal is to help children learn responsible behavior while maintaining mutual respect between adults and children.

Core Principle: Kindness and Firmness
Kindness means treating children with dignity and empathy. Firmness means maintaining clear expectations and boundaries. Together, they create a balanced approach to parenting.

Why Positive Discipline Works
• Builds emotional regulation
• Strengthens parent-child relationships
• Teaches important life skills such as cooperation and responsibility
• Encourages a growth mindset

Practical Parenting Tools
• Pause and regulate emotions before reacting
• Use calm communication
• Guide children toward solutions rather than punish mistakes
• Model emotional awareness and accountability

Conclusion
Positive discipline focuses on long‑term growth rather than short‑term obedience. By balancing empathy and structure, parents help children develop resilience, confidence, and emotional intelligence.

⏰ EB Families can also take part in the Positive Discipline support group, led by Sparks and Magali, each month at the Lower School MPR following First Friday Coffee.
