Beats, Books & Belonging: A Look Back at EB’s Black History Month 2026

February’s Black History Month celebrations were once again a big success, both inside and outside the classroom.

Beats, Books & Belonging: A Look Back at EB’s Black History Month 2026

Throughout February, EB hosted a variety of on-campus events honoring Black culture within our school community, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Parents’ Association BIPOC Committee. These activities complemented classroom lessons highlighting Black leaders, artists, scientists, and changemakers organized by teachers, SEL Coach, Christopher Colebourn and Director of Diversity, Equity, Justice and Belonging, Chrissy Greer.

The month began with some high-energy tabling and a “wheel of fortune” style trivia game (with prizes!), inviting students and families alike to test their knowledge about Black History at the Lower School dropoff.
Members of our parent community joined us in the LS Library for a special mid-month “Black History Month Story Time”, reading some of their favorite books aloud and sparking meaningful conversations with our students about topics like identity, resilience, joy, and justice.

The celebrations reached a joyful and inspiring finale on February 26 with a visit from Brooklyn-based musician Okai Muzik, who offered interactive drumming demonstrations during schoolwide assemblies. Students were captivated by Okai’s percussion-driven style, which showcased musical traditions from across the African diaspora, ranging from Haitian Vodou rhythms on Rada and Petwo drums to Puerto Rican Bomba on Barril drums, Cuban Rumba and Son on Congas, Colombian Cumbia and Bullerengue on Alegre drums, and West African beats on Djembe. Even more exciting was the opportunity to try the drums out for themselves!

We are so proud to continue building a joyful, inclusive community where every child feels represented and valued. A heartfelt thank-you to all the parents, staff and teachers who helped make this month so meaningful!
